Signs your brakes need service

Brakes give warning signs before they fail. Book a brake inspection if you notice any of the following — most of these start mild and get dangerous fast if ignored:

  • Squealing or high-pitched whine — wear indicators contacting the rotor, typically 2–3 mm pad life left
  • Grinding or metallic scraping — pads worn to the backing plate, rotors damaging
  • Vibration or pulsing through the pedal — warped rotors, often from overheating on long downhill drives or sudden hard stops
  • Soft or spongy pedal — air in brake lines, leaking brake fluid, failing master cylinder
  • Pedal travels farther than usual before braking engages — worn pads, leaking caliper, or low brake fluid
  • Brake warning light on the dashboard — low fluid, worn pads (some vehicles), or ABS/ESC issue
  • Vehicle pulls to one side under braking — stuck caliper, uneven pad wear, or damaged brake line
  • Burning smell after driving — overheated pads, stuck caliper dragging

What we inspect & repair

A full brake inspection at AllCars covers every component in the brake system — not just pad thickness. We measure and document everything before giving you a quote:

Pads & Rotors

  • ·Pad thickness — minimum 3 mm (manufacturer spec), replace below 4 mm
  • ·Rotor thickness vs minimum spec stamped on the hub
  • ·Rotor surface — scoring, grooving, heat spots
  • ·Uneven pad wear indicating caliper or slider issues

Calipers & Hardware

  • ·Caliper piston seal integrity (no leaks)
  • ·Caliper slider pins — free movement, no seized components
  • ·Caliper mounting brackets, bushings, clips
  • ·Anti-rattle hardware and shim condition

Brake Fluid & Lines

  • ·Brake fluid level and moisture content (should be <3% for safety)
  • ·Steel brake lines — corrosion, leaks, chafing
  • ·Rubber brake hoses — bulging, cracking, internal collapse
  • ·Master cylinder — no external leaks, no internal bypass

Parking Brake

  • ·Holding capacity on inclines
  • ·Cable tension and free movement (if cable-operated)
  • ·Electronic parking brake function (if equipped)

Pads: ceramic, semi-metallic, or organic?

Modern brake pads come in three main compounds. We help you choose based on how you drive and what's on your vehicle today:

Ceramic (our usual recommendation)

  • ·Quiet, low dust, long-lasting
  • ·Great for daily driving, commuting, city/highway mix
  • ·Slightly more expensive (~$30-50 more per axle) but worth it

Semi-metallic

  • ·Stronger cold-bite, higher heat capacity
  • ·Good for towing, aggressive driving, heavy vehicles
  • ·Louder, more dust, more rotor wear than ceramic

Organic

  • ·Quiet, gentle on rotors, low-cost
  • ·Wears fastest, not ideal for heavy braking
  • ·Rarely recommended — we typically avoid these

Frequently asked questions

How long do brake pads last in Ontario?

Depends on driving style and vehicle. Typical range: 40,000–80,000 km for front pads, 60,000–100,000 km for rear. City commuters burn through fronts faster due to stop-and-go; highway drivers stretch them further. Ceramic pads on the higher end of those ranges.

Can I just replace pads without rotors?

Yes if rotors are still within minimum thickness spec and have a smooth surface. We measure before recommending. Typically rotors can go through 2 pad changes before needing replacement, though heat-warped rotors need to go sooner.

Why do my brakes pulsate at highway speed?

Warped rotors. Usually from heat — long downhill braking, riding the pedal, or sudden hard stops on hot rotors. Sometimes rotors can be machined smooth if thick enough; usually replacement is more cost-effective long-term.

My brake light is on. Is it safe to drive to your shop?

Depends. If the pedal feels normal and the light is just on, likely a fluid level or worn-pad sensor — drive carefully and bring it in. If the pedal is soft, goes to the floor, or the vehicle pulls hard when braking, don't drive — call for a tow and we'll coordinate.

Do you do free brake inspections?

Yes — free, no obligation to repair with us. We measure pads, rotors, check calipers and fluid, and give you a written quote. You can take that quote elsewhere for comparison or handle it yourself.

How long does a brake job take?

Pads only: 90 minutes per axle. Pads + rotors: 2 hours per axle. Full 4-wheel pads + rotors: ~3 hours. Caliper replacement adds 30–60 min. Most jobs done while you wait — we have coffee and WiFi.

Do you offer a warranty on brake work?

12-month / 20,000 km warranty on all brake parts and labour, whichever comes first. Manufacturer warranty applies to parts on top of that. Warranty transfers if you sell the vehicle.
