What the check engine light means
Modern vehicles have 30+ onboard computers monitoring engine, transmission, emissions, brakes, airbags, and body systems. When any one detects something outside spec, it stores a fault code and often illuminates a warning light — most famously the check engine light.
Two states matter:
- •Steady check engine light — something is wrong but the vehicle is drivable short-term. Could be loose gas cap, O₂ sensor, catalytic converter, EVAP leak, misfire (resolved), minor sensor issue
- •Flashing check engine light — active engine misfire. Drive minimally or tow. Continued driving destroys the catalytic converter ($1,500–$3,500 to replace)
- •ABS light — anti-lock braking inactive. Brakes still work but without ABS. Drive carefully
- •Airbag/SRS light — airbags may not deploy in an accident. Priority repair
- •Oil pressure light — stop driving immediately, engine damage in minutes
- •Temperature light — overheating, stop driving to prevent head gasket failure

Frequently asked questions
My check engine light is on but the car drives fine. Can I keep driving?
If the light is steady (not flashing), yes — typically for a few days or weeks. Get it scanned soon; ignoring it usually escalates (a $200 O₂ sensor becomes a $2,500 catalytic converter). If the light is flashing, minimize driving — you're destroying the catalyst actively.
Will the light come back after I fix the problem?
If we fix the root cause correctly, no. Sometimes there are multiple related issues (e.g., bad O₂ sensor AND weak catalyst). Our diagnostic catches both. If a light returns within 30 days of our repair, the diagnostic fee is waived for the re-scan.
Can I use an OBD-II reader from Canadian Tire myself?
You can read the code — but the code is often misleading. A "P0420 catalyst below efficiency" code could mean a bad cat, a bad upstream or downstream O₂ sensor, an exhaust leak, or even fuel trim issues. Without further testing, replacing the cat based on the code alone often doesn't fix the problem.
Can the diagnostic detect transmission problems?
Yes — our scanner reads transmission (TCM) codes and monitors shift quality, fluid temperature, and electronic pressure readings. Hard shifts, slipping, or delayed engagement often throw specific codes we can identify.
Do you diagnose intermittent issues?
Yes, though intermittent issues take longer. We attach a data logger to capture fault codes, live engine data, and road conditions during your daily drive. You pick up the vehicle, drive it for 2–3 days normally, and return — we download the captured data and pinpoint when the issue occurs.
Is engine diagnostic the same as a safety inspection?
No. Safety inspection (SSC) checks brakes, tires, suspension, structural, lights — a different scope. Engine diagnostic looks at the engine management system. A vehicle can fail safety for tire or brake issues while having a clean engine scan, or pass safety with a lit check engine light (the SSC readiness check is separate).
