Why your AC stopped blowing cold
Air conditioning is a sealed system. If it is not cold any more, something has changed inside a loop that is supposed to never lose anything — so "just top it up" is treating a symptom.
In order of how often we see it:
- •Refrigerant leak — the most common cause by a wide margin. Usually an O-ring, a hose crimp, the condenser, or the compressor shaft seal
- •Failed compressor — often announces itself with a rattle or a clutch that will not engage
- •Condenser damage — it sits at the very front of the car, so road debris and stone chips get it
- •Blocked cabin air filter — air is cold at the vents but there is almost none of it
- •Blend door actuator — cold on one side, warm on the other, or it will not switch from heat
- •Electrical — pressure switch, relay, or a wiring fault stopping the compressor from being commanded on
The diagnosis decides the repair. We do not guess and we do not sell you a compressor to cover a twelve-dollar O-ring.
We find the leak before we recharge
A recharge without leak detection is money you spend twice. The refrigerant that leaked out last season will leak out again this season, and you will be back in the same seat.
What we actually do:
- •Pressure test the system with nitrogen to confirm it holds — and to hear where it does not
- •UV dye and a black light for slow leaks that pressure alone will not reveal
- •Electronic leak detector around fittings, the condenser and the compressor
- •Evacuate the system under vacuum to pull out moisture and air — both of which wreck cooling and corrode the system from the inside
- •Recharge by weight to the manufacturer specification, not by gauge feel
- •Vent temperature check before the car leaves
If you only want a recharge and you accept it may not last, say so and we will do exactly that — but we will tell you what we found first.
R-134a or R-1234yf — this changes your bill
Roughly from the 2015 model year onward, vehicles shipped with R-1234yf instead of R-134a. It is a different refrigerant, it needs different equipment, and it costs several times more per kilogram.
This is the single biggest reason two AC quotes on two cars can look wildly different for what sounds like the same job. It is worth knowing which one your car takes before you compare prices anywhere — including here.
- •Pre-2015 vehicles: almost always R-134a
- •2015 onward: increasingly R-1234yf — check the underhood sticker
- •The two are not interchangeable, and mixing them damages equipment and the system
How long it takes
Most AC work is same-day. The variable is parts availability, not labour.
- •Diagnosis and leak test: 1–1.5 hours
- •Evacuate and recharge: about 1 hour on top of the diagnosis
- •Cabin air filter: 15–30 minutes depending on where the manufacturer hid it
- •Condenser replacement: 2–4 hours
- •Compressor replacement: 3–5 hours, plus a system flush and a new receiver-drier
What affects the price
We quote after the diagnosis, in writing, and you approve it before anything starts. The things that move the number:
- •Which refrigerant the system takes
- •Whether the leak is an O-ring, a hose, the condenser, or the compressor
- •Whether a failed compressor sent debris through the system — that adds a flush and a drier
- •How much of the front end has to come apart to reach the condenser on your model
- •OEM versus quality aftermarket for the part itself

Frequently asked questions
Can you just top up my AC?
We can, and sometimes that is the sensible call on an older car you are not keeping. But a sealed system that lost refrigerant has a leak, and a top-up on a leaking system is temporary by definition. We will find the leak first and tell you what it would take to fix properly — then you decide.
My AC works, but only when I am driving. Why?
Classic symptom of low refrigerant or a cooling fan that is not running. At speed you get airflow across the condenser from the car moving; sitting still you need the fan. Worth checking soon — running an AC system low on refrigerant starves the compressor of lubrication.
How much refrigerant should a system lose per year?
Essentially none. A small loss over many years is normal as seals age, but if you are recharging annually you have a leak that is worth finding.
Do those DIY recharge cans from Canadian Tire work?
They put refrigerant in, which is not the same as fixing anything. Two real risks: most cans include sealant that can clog the system and the recovery equipment, and there is no way to charge accurately by weight from a can — overcharging cools worse than undercharging and can damage the compressor.
Is it worth fixing AC on an older car?
Depends entirely on what failed. An O-ring or a hose is usually a straightforward repair worth doing on almost any car. A compressor failure that contaminated the system is a much larger job, and on a high-mileage vehicle that is a real conversation about value. We will give you the number and our honest read before you commit.
When should I book?
If you can, before the first hot week. May through August is when every shop in Etobicoke is full of AC work, and that is also when parts get back-ordered. A system that was weak last September will not have improved over the winter.
